Review| Cat Tarot by Megan Lynn Kott

Here’s to my third tarot deck! I found this in Kinokuniya after collecting my previous online order. The cat-themed tarot deck is designed to bring humor and entertainment while also serving as a practical tool for divination. I believe it can be an excellent choice for beginners who may have struggled with traditional card decks like the Thoth Tarot or the Rider-Waite Tarot (originally illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith), just like I did.

Cat Tarot

This entertaining modern twist to the classic tarot combines authenticity with a feline sense of humor in a complete deck for experienced and new readers alike, including 78 tarot cards and a guidebook on how to get the most out of the cat’s wisdom.

Packaged in its own cardboard box for safety. Will ship separately from art prints or flat media.

***After these sell out in my shop – they are available through my publisher Chronicle Books. Beware of copies that come in a fold-out box, or do not come with a physical guidebook. Those are knock-offs, and your deck will definitely be cursed and give you the 5 of cups every time (just kidding on that last bit, OR AM I?!)***

Seek answers to the past, purr-esent, and future with this whimsical and gorgeously illustrated tarot deck led by the oldest symbol of wisdom, divination, and inspiration: the cat!

This entertaining modern twist to the classic tarot combines authenticity with a feline sense of humor in a complete deck for experienced readers and beginners alike. The sturdy keepsake box (with a curious cat peeping around its edges) holds 78 tarot cards and a guidebook on how to get the most out of the cat’s wisdom and psychic abilities. Megan Lynn Kott’s original artwork infuses each card with playful cat behavior that brings a witty and wise new interpretation to the classic Rider Waite Smith format. Julia Smillie offers thorough guidance and instructions, with charmingly cat-related readings, in the accompanying booklet. For cat lovers and tarot collectors, this deck holds the key to helping you better understand yourself and perhaps your most familiar companion.

Review

Psst: Upon conducting a Google search for Jenna Huerta, I initially believed it could be the renowned Jenna Huerta, but the available information did not provide any additional details to verify this assumption.

The feline-themed deck is created with so many relatable illustrations for those who are familiar with their behaviors and temper. With so much difficulty learning from the regular Thoth Tarot or the Rider-Waite Tarot (originally illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith), I find that this card helps me to pick up the major and minor arcana a lot easier than before.

This card deck’s messages favorite cats. I mean, you could say that the authors are biased toward cats than dogs. There are a lot of playfully mean comments about dogs and you can tell from this The Devil card (laughs).

Despite the standard number of 78 cards in this deck, I am encountering significant difficulty when attempting to shuffle them. Ignoring the fact that tarot decks generally contain more cards compared to oracle decks, these cards are STICKY or should I say, ROUGH!  They persistently cling to each other, much like sandpaper, making it nearly impossible to achieve a thorough shuffling where every few cards are properly mixed. In order to gain a sense of certainty, I resorted to employing the mahjong method on a cloth surface.

The card stock quality is subpar. Upon receiving the cards, I noticed that the top left corner (when facing the illustration) was already frayed, indicating potential issues with the printer’s cutter and its sharpness.

Furthermore, attempting to shuffle the cards using any method other than the “mahjong method” leads to chipping. The second photo I’ve included below depicts the damage that occurred during my initial attempt at shuffling on the very first day.

While the deck has its charm with its adorable illustrations and easily understandable meanings, I must express my hesitation to repurchase these cards unless notable improvements are made. Additionally, considering the unsatisfactory quality of the card stock, it feels rather disappointing to find them priced at a higher end of the spectrum.
